One Act Plays
A Child’s Christmas in Whales by Dylan Thomas, adapted for the stage by Stacy Barton
Orlando Sentinel Theater Review By Elizabeth Maupin, Theater Critic.
Dylan Thomas’ “A Child’s Christmas in Wales” is a little smidgen of a thing — a piece that had its roots in radio and demands to be read aloud. And Stacy Barton’s adaptation of the piece, too, is a little smidgen of a thing, sweetly evocative of a childhood in another time and place and over as quickly as the eruption of gifts being unwrapped on Christmas morning.
Dear Father Christmas By Stacy Barton
Orlando Sentinel Arts & Entertainment Review By Diane Hubbard Burns, Arts & Entertainment Critic.
Mad Cow’s Dear Father Christmas is a sentimental paean to Christmases past. Stacy Barton wrote the graceful script in which Christopher Lee Gibson, as Father Christmas, rereads the letters he received from four siblings over the years spanning World War II.
He laments the modernization that has dashed letter writing — “No one seems to write me anymore, not in this century, anyway” — and wonders what has become of these children who left their Christmas drawings for him by the chimney.
The projection of those pictures, and the eventual emergence of the four siblings in a cozy parlor that rises out of the stage, enlarges this little theater piece for the audience. A moment at the end of it — when Father Christmas asks the audience to join in a carol — captures the nostalgic poignancy of the piece.
